A major earthquake (7.4 magnitude) hit eastern Nepal, near Mount Everest, two weeks after more than 8,000 people died in a devastating earthquake.

  • At least 37 people were killed and over 1,000 injured.

National Affairs

Today (12th May) is International Nurses Day.

  • Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing, was born May 12, 1820 and therefore, this day is celebrated as International Nurses Day around the world to celebrate the contributions nurses make to society.
  • President Pranab Mukherjee presented the National Florence Nightingale Award to 35 nursing professionals on the eve of the International Day of Nurses today.
  • The Ministry of Health had established prices in 1973 as a mark of recognition for meritorious service nurses.
  • Until 2014, a total of 306 nurses were decorated with this award. This year, 35 nurses conferred these awards.
  • The award carries Rs 50,000 cash, a certificate, a citation certificate and a medal.

Worried about depleting groundwater level in the national capital, imposed National Green Tribunal (NGT) today heavy fines for five star hotels, shopping centers and hospitals not to install appropriate rainwater systems in their premises.

Sivanadane Mandjiny, An Indian-American professor of chemistry at the University Of North Carolina (USA) was named the University of North Carolina Pembroke recipient of the 2015 UNC Board of Governors Award for Teaching Excellence.

  • Each year, the Governing Council names a teacher to each of the 17 UNC campuses to receive the award.
  • The winners will collect a commemorative bronze medallion and a cash prize of $ 12,500.

Preparations for Chandrayaan-2, the second lunar exploration mission of the country, is progressing well and should be ready for launch in 2017, Anil Bhardwaj, Director, Laboratory of Space Physics, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said today.

New appointments

President of India appoints governors in six states

  • Former Minister Odisha Draupadi Murmu will be the new governor of
  • It will replace Dr Syed Ahmed, who was sent to Manipur for the remaining period of his mandate.
  • JP Rajkhowa appointed new Governor of Arunachal Pradesh that will replace Lieutenant General (ret.) Nirbhay Sharma who was transferred and appointed as Governor of Mizoram for the rest of his term.
  • Roy came to be the Governor of Tripura.
  • Shanmuganthan was appointed governor Meghalaya.

National Human Rights Commission member Justice Cyriac Joseph was now allowed to act as Commission President until the appointment of a new president in place of Justice KG Balakrishnan who has completed his term.

Satish Reddy, Chairman, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, has been appointed as the new chairman of the National Security Council (NSC).

  • He became Chairman of Venu Srinivasan, who led the work of the Board since July 2011.
  • Note: The National Security Council is the highest body established by the Government. of India, Ministry of Labour and Employment, generate, develop and sustain a voluntary movement on safety, health and environment at national level.
