Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe started his official three-day visit to India today at the invitation of his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

  • The three-day visit from September 14 to 16, is the first international official visit Wickremesinghe after taking office last month.
  • Note: It has been sworn in as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka for the fourth time last month after his party’s victory in parliamentary elections.
  • It is expected to formally request the support of India in Geneva during the 30th session of the UN Council on Human Rights.

A proposal to declare Nepal a Hindu state today was overwhelmingly rejected by the Constituent Assembly reaffirmed that the Hindu majority nation will remain secular.

  • Nepal is a Hindu nation for centuries when kings reigned, but has been a secular state since the monarchy was abolished in 2006.
  • More than two thirds of the assembly members, who started vote on the draft constitution on Sunday, voted against making Nepal a Hindu state again.
  • The proposal needed the support of two thirds of members to be adopted.

  • This day serves to spread the Hindi language and heritage and cultural values.
  • Hindi Diwas is celebrated September 14 because on that day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi in Devanagari writing as an official language of the Republic of India.
  • Hindi got its name from the Persian word Hind, meaning “land of the Indus River.
  • Hindi is spoken as a first language by 258 million people and is recognized as the second language in the world.

At the state level, Hindi is the official language of the following Indian States:

  • Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
