International affairs

Deputy Prime Minister Kamal Thapa of Nepal arrived in Delhi today for talks with the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

  • This is his first visit abroad after taking office.
  • During the talks, the Indian side is expected to convey its concerns over the continued unrest in the Himalayan nation.

National Affairs

The Government of Maharashtra has declared a “state of drought as” 14708 in 43,000 villages of the state.

This means drought covers 34% of the state.

This is the second consecutive year of drought in Maharashtra.

  • The state has had three of these calamities in the past four years.

The government amended the Central Order under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 with immediate effect to increase the availability and avoid hoarding impulses.

  • It will allow the imposition of stock limits on pulses from imports, stocks held by exporters, stocks from being used as raw materials by processors and stocks of major food retailers ministerial allowed.
  • The Centre has taken several steps to increase the availability of pulses prohibiting the export of pulses, the extension of zero import duties on pulses and also the import of 5000 tonnes of pulses from the stabilization fund pricing.

The Rajasthan government has issued a notification to provide 5% quota for Gujjars and other special backward classes (SBC) for which the Assembly adopted a law last month.

  • The specific classes Rajasthan back (seat reservation in educational institutions of the state and appointments and messages under the state) Act 2015 (Act No. 32) took effect from 16 October 2015.
  • The Act will allow 5% reservation in jobs and educational institutions to Gujjars, Banjara communities, and Raibari Gadiya Lohar in the state.

Manufacturers of India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal have set up the BBINF, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal Investment Forum to stimulate sub-regional trade and the Investment inspired by motor vehicles BBIN Agreement.

President of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) Abdul Matlub Ahmad inaugurated the Forum in Dhaka.

  • Important Note: The motor vehicles bbin Agreement which was signed in June 2015 for transnational transport services among the four countries, is set to enter service in January 2016.

Lead counsel Shrihari Aney was appointed new General Counsel of Maharashtra.

He succeeds Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, who received the temporary charging Post AG four months ago after former AG Sunil Manohar resigned.

Awards and Recognition

Nobel Peace Prize Kailash Satyarthi was conferred with prestigious university Harvard Humanitarian award for his ongoing contribution to the cause of child rights.

  • This annual award is given to a person who has worked to improve the quality of life.

Satyarthi is the first Indian to win this award.
