The Visit of President of Sweden

  • President Pranab Mukherjee arrived in Sweden on the first leg of his five-day state in Sweden and Belarus, the first by an Indian head of state, during which a number of major agreements on sustainable development, scientific research are likely to be signed.
  • During his state visit of three days in Sweden, the President will meet Prime Minister Stefan Lofven, President of the Swedish Parliament and the Leader of the Opposition, Anna Kinberg Batra also number of meetings with the King and Queen.
  • The visit will focus on innovation, sustainable development, urban development and scientific research with the two countries to explore ways to strengthen the mutual exchange in the fields of commerce and science.

 Tax on services Increased to 14%

Arun Jaitley Minister of Finance in his budget had proposed to increase the service tax from 12.36 per cent (including education cess) to 14 percent.

  • Some of the key services that attract higher tax and therefore become more expensive are: rail operators, airlines, credit card companies, insurance, advertising, architecture, construction, credit cards, management and event tour.
  • Jaitley proposed to increase the rate of service tax to 14 percent to facilitate a smooth transition to the regime’s products and services (GST), which the government wants to deploy in April 2016.


New Chairman of the Engineers India Ltd.

Sanjay Gupta today took over as president and CEO of Engineers India Ltd, the state-owned engineering and consulting, procurement and construction (EPC) company in hydrocarbons and petrochemicals.

  • Gupta AK Purwaha which replaced antiquated yesterday.
  • Gupta has about 34 years’ experience in the business, from planning to the implementation of mega projects in the Grassroot refineries and petrochemical sector.

K.Sivan-new head VSSC

  • Sivan, emeritus scientist, ISRO, took office as the 12th Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC).
  • He succeeds MS Dathan who retired from service.
  • Sivan joined ISRO PSLV in 1982 in the project and contributed to the mission planning, design, integration and analysis.
  • He also led the project Reusable Launch Vehicle Technology Demonstrator (RLV-TD). In April 2011, Dr. Sivan joined the project as director GSLV.
  • His leadership led to the successful flight of GSLV with an indigenous cryogenic stage.


 Shooter Gurpreet Singh qualifies for Rio 2016

Former Commonwealth Games gold medalist Gurpreet Singh became the fifth Indian shooter to qualify for the 2016 fourth finishing Rio Olympics in category 10m air pistol at the World Cup event ISSF Rifle / gun to be held in Munich.

  • The 28-year-old shot a total of 154.8 points to finish fourth in the final.
  • Joao Costa of Portugal who shot a total of 201.4 in the case won the gold medal.
  • The other Indians have won India the previous four quota places are Jitu Rai medalist Gagan Narang Olympic bronze Apurvi Chandela and only individual Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra of India.

Bhanot Asian Association Elected Vice President of athletics

  • Scam contaminated former secretary General Lalit Bhanot IOA was elected vice president of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) in the polls held in Wuhan, China.
  • Recommended by the Federation of Athletics of India, Mr. Bhanot fought through a 14 strong challenge in the elections to be chosen as one of five vice-presidents at the Council AAA on the eve of the Asian Championships Wuhan.
  • Tainted in the corruption scandal that has engulfed the 2010 Commonwealth Games, Mr. Bhanot served as secretary of the AFI for more than a decade and was the secretary general of the IOA when he served a suspension of 14 month by the IOC.
