New appointments

The Prime Minister has approved the appointment of Pradeep Kumar Sinha, a 1977 batch IAS officer, as the next Cabinet Secretary with effect from 13 June

  • Sinha is a senior executive UP IAS and is currently the secretary to the Ministry of Energy.
  • He succeeds Ajit Seth.

Veena Jain, 1984 Indian Information Service agent, will be supported as Director General (DG) of Doordarshan News.

  • In addition, Jain has also been asked to hold a charge as a special duty officer of the Ministry for New Wing Cell and social media.

Nearly four months after sacking Avinash Chander, the Indian government today appointed Christopher Selvin radar specialist and scientific missiles GS Reddy as DRDO chief and scientific advisor to the defense minister, respectively.

  • Note: Avinash Chander, who was sacked in January, held the two posts, but the government concluded that it was wrong to expect a scientist to be a councilor and the head of the body development research and decided to split the job.

During a traditional ceremony, educated US Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wodeyar, the adopted son of Pramoda Devi Wodeyar, was crowned today as the titular head of the royal family Mysuru past.

  • The Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, Canada has honored the 42-year-old for his few achievements to students from disadvantaged sections of India.
  • Note: The government of British Columbia had invited Kumar in recognition of his work through internationally acclaimed Super30, which successfully mentoring 30 students mainly from underprivileged.

Business & Economy

The Indian economy grew at 7.3% in 2014-15 due to the improved performance of both services and manufacturing sectors.

  • Economic growth was 9% for the 2013-14 year.

The output of electricity, gas, water supply and other public services increased by 7.9 percent against 4.8 percent a year ago.

  • Note: the Indian economy exceeds the growth rate even in China.

The Centre is looking to collect Rs 22,000 crore by selling the assets of five patient’s central public sector enterprises (SEPS) and the sale would be closed in the next 2-3 months.
