Today (2nd September) is World coconut Day.

September 2 was declared World Day of coconuts by the Coconut Community Asia and Pacific (APCC) is headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia, to coincide with the founding day of the APCC.

  • The celebration aims to create awareness on the importance of coconut and its potential to reduce poverty, by encouraging investment and promoting development of the industry of coconut in member countries.
  • About the AIA: The AIA is an intergovernmental organization of 18 member countries, mandated to promote, coordinate and harmonies coconut Asia-Pacific development activities.

The South African city of Durban was chosen as host for the Commonwealth Games in 2022 at the General Assembly of the Federation in New Zealand today.

Important points to note:

  • Durban will be the first African city to host the Commonwealth Games after being confirmed as the site of 2,022.
  • The Games begin on July 18 (the 104th birthday of former South African President Nelson Mandela) and finish July 30.
  • This will be the 22nd staging of the event, which is held every four years.
  • Athletes from more than 50 countries (most of which are former British colonies) will compete.

Indian cricketers in ICC rankings acquired test after their first triumph in series in Sri Lanka in 22 years.

  • Pacer Ishant Sharma broke into top-20 bowlers, while Cheteshwar Pujara entered the top-20 list of drummers.

In a major step to rejuvenate the energy sector, has approved today the marginal Cabinet Fields Policy (MFP).

  • This policy will auction of unused fields of Oil & Natural Gas Corporation Ltd (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd (OIL).
  • Under this new policy, 69 untapped oil fields owned by ONGC and Oil India for many years will be open for tenders.
  • The government will also move to a revenue sharing model for fields auctioned in the MFP.
  • The new policy also covers all hydrocarbons found in the field.

Cabinet authorized the repayment of Rs.113 crore losses pulses imported between 2006-11 by NAFED, PEC, MMTC and STC.

  • This will be central to financially strong PSUs to intensify trading activities to cool prices of essential products.
  • To minimize the impact of monsoon deficit, the Centre has allocated Rs 410 crore 20 states and union territories this year under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Yojana Sinchayee (PMKSY).
