National Affairs

The Union Cabinet has given a seal of approval to a minimum pension of 1,000 rupees a month for life to retirees under Employees’ Pension Plan, EPS in 1995.

  • About 20 lakh people will be benefited under the scheme after that decision.
  • The Cabinet also approved amendment to the Prevention of Corruption Act 2013 to fix more stringent measures against corruption.
  • This bill makes corruption in the heinous crime category
  • This includes seven years’ imprisonment at most in cases related to graft.
  • Earlier, the Act has proposed that six-month minimum sentence, while the new bill, it has increased by at least 3 years.
  • The bill states that all corruption trial should be completed in two years and both corrupt and the donor will be held guilty.
  • Union Cabinet gave its nod lighthouse 100 smart cities project NDA government and the new urban renewal mission with a total expenditure of about Rs 1 lakh crore.
  • The cabinet also authorized the old housing projects initiated by the previous government.

Rural Regional Banks (Amendment) Bill, 2014, which obtained the concurrence of the Rajya Sabha by voice vote today, aims to help rural regional banks (RRBs) raise their authorized capital and enable them to mop up capital market fund to help strengthen them.

  • Lok Sabha had already passed the bill last December.
  • Note: This bill raises authorized capital of 2,000 crore rupees five crore.
