Nepal began issuing passports to sexual minorities, adding a third category-genre in passports.

  • Nepal had hitherto been issuing passports under single male (codified as M) and Female (codified in categories F), now it provide passports for all sexual minorities, commonly known as lesbians, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGTBT ) in other (codified as O) category.
  • Nepal also issue a certificate of citizenship to all sexual minorities in other or Class “O”.
  • Manoj Shahi (now renamed as Monica Shahi), a transgender Nepal is set to become the first winner of the category “O” passport in Nepal.
  • Note: Countries such as Australia and New Zealand have already recognized third gender in passports with a sign like “X”.

Pakistan has made it mandatory for local Sikhs to take prior permission of the religious organization Sikh above before visiting other countries, including India.

Egypt has opened a major expansion of the Suez Canal, which deepens the main track and provides ships with a 35 km (22 mile) canal parallel.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the first National Day Handloom (7th August)

Today in Chennai.

  • At the event Modi also launched the brand “India Handloom” to help the weavers with the brand for global markets.
  • He also conferred prices Sant Kabir and national awards for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014 to personalities crafts distinguished occasion.
  • Note: August 7 was chosen as National Day Handloom because that day, the Swadeshi Movement was launched in 1905.
  • This move comes revival of domestic products and production processes.

The southern states today decided to form “Inter-State Coordination Council of Southern Forest Ministers“, an inter-state coordination council in order to solve the forest problems in the region.

  • This council would initiate standard operating procedures to address forest-related issues in the region.
  • As part of the Interstate Council, a full-time secretariat will work in the respective forest departments.
  • For the first year, the Kerala Forest Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan will chair the council.

Repealing and amending Bill, 2015, a bill to remove a set of 295 obsolete laws dealing with several issues, including changes in the marriage laws and hoarding cement was passed by the Lok Sabha yesterday.

Tripura Assembly adopted a resolution calling on the Union Government to amend section 302 of the IPC to abolish capital punishment.

  • The resolution is apparently fallout from the recent hanging of Yakub Memon, the first accused in the Mumbai serial blasts.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) allowed banks to shift, merge or close all their branches with the exception of rural branches and semi-urban branches only at their own discretion.

  • Banks have also been allowed to spend some activities of a branch in a center due to space constraints or lease without prior approval of RBI.

The government will impose a 10% duty on the import wheat effective until 31 March next year.

Agreements Rs 2,530 crore of value were signed today between several private companies and the government of Rajasthan to establish industrial units in the state as a buildup to the “resurgent Rajasthan Partnership Summit” will be held in Jaipur on November 19-20.

India has extended anti-dumping duty on imports of all forms and qualities of vitamin C $ 3.74 per kg in China for five years to safeguard the interests of the domestic industry.

  • The anti-dumping duty was imposed following the findings of the designated authority that concluded that imports of vitamin-C have caused injury to the domestic industry.

NASA has extended a contract with the Russian Federal Space Agency for $ 490 million for us to transport astronauts to the International Space Station in the middle of a lack of funding from Congress.

Awards and Recognition

A global earth observation satellite and reducing disaster risk – GlobalSat for DRR – proposed in the framework of the UN is to be dedicated to APJ Abdul Kalam who died on July 27.

  • The satellite will be named as UN Kalam GlobalSat.

Russian journalist Zhanna Nemtsova was awarded the Solidarity Prize 2015 in Poland.
